Family Planning

Birth control information and counseling, including abstinence counseling, and a suitable
method of contraception are available to those in the childbearing age group. Examinations, including a pelvic exam, pap smear, and a clinical breast exam, are done before birth

HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD)

Confidential investigation, examination, counseling, and treatment of sexually transmitted disease/HIV are provided for anyone 12 years of age or older. Walk-in clinic hours are

Immunizations and Vaccines

Vaccines are available to prevent: Chickenpox, diphtheria, Hib (Haemophilus influenza type B), and Hepatitis B (under specific guidelines), influenza, measles, mumps, pertussis (whooping cough), Pneumococcal disease, polio, tetanus (lockjaw), rubella (German measles).

Infants should begin receiving their immunizations at two months of age. A certificate of immunizations is required for entry into day care centers, Head Start, and public or private schools through grade 12.

Note: The state rules governing immunization have changed for the 2010-2011 school year to better protect Alabama's young children and adolescents. Recent amendments affect preschoolers and students entering sixth grade. For more information, view the press release and visit the Division of Immunization.

Tuberculosis

Tuberculin skin test, sputum test, and x-ray, if indicated, are available to anyone for diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis. Medications are provided if indicated.

Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)

Health assessments, supplemental food, and nutrition education are available to pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women, infants, and children up to age 5. For more information, call (256) 533-0826, or visit the Division of WIC.

eWIC

EBT stands for Electronics Benefit Transfer. WIC EBT is an electronic process where the food benefits are automatically added onto a card, similar to a debit card. This card, which will be known as the eWIC card, will replace the current paper-based system. The Alabama WIC Program spent several years in the planning phase and made the decision to utilize an online eWIC card.
