To address arthritis, a major public health problem, the Alabama Arthritis Control Program was established with individuals or groups dedicated to decreasing the burden of arthritis. Arthritis is not a single disease that affects all individuals in the same manner, but rather, arthritis consists of over 100 distinct conditions. Persons aged 65 and older are the fastest growing segment of Alabama's population and the impact of arthritis is expected to increase dramatically by the year 2020 as the "baby boomers" age. A partial list of these conditions is provided on What is Arthritis?
