Seniors Taking Action Today

The Alabama Department of Public Health, Alabama Arthritis Program (AAP) was recently awarded a grant through the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) to fund Seniors Taking Action Today (STAT). STAT provides two benefits at no cost: Training for nursing home employees to be certified to lead the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program (AFEP), and nursing home residents will be able to participate in AFEP courses. AFEP (formerly PACE or People with Arthritis Can Exercise) is an evidence-based, low-impact physical activity program proven to reduce pain and decrease stiffness. AFEP covers a variety of activities focusing on areas such as gentle range-of-motion, endurance-building, relaxation, and more. It is proven to reduce pain and decrease stiffness.

Nursing homes desiring to participate in the STAT program must complete an application and return via fax or regular mail. Training will be scheduled based on information provided in your application. Applications may be requested via email or telephone at: samille.jackson@adph.state.al.us, 334-206-5658, or ellen.snipes@adph.state.al.us, 334-206-2063.

Nursing homes without computer availability for training purposes will be able to schedule a location as convenient as possible but will be responsible for their own travel and lunch for the five hour session. NOTE: There is only a thirty minute lunch break during this five hour training session.

Online AFEP training for the STAT program is provided by Aerobics Fitness Association of America (AFAA). To receive online training, nursing homes must have the following computer bandwidth capability:
