The week of April 4-10 is National Public Health Week, and April 7 is World Health Day, two observances established to recognize contributions made by public health and to highlight important issues. The critical need for public health has been magnified by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In concert with the National Public Health Week 2022 theme, “Public Health is Where You Are,” the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) encourages the public to take action in their communities to lead healthier and happier lives.
Some activities to promote health cost little or no money. One important way to improve health is to eat healthier food. In addition to healthier eating, being physically active can reduce the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and several cancers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention promotes regular physical activity and recommends that adults get a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity each week, yet only 68 percent of adults participate in any leisure-time physical activity or exercises on a monthly basis.
