The Alabama Department of Public Health Office of Emergency Medical Services joins in the celebration of National Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) Day on May 18 by recognizing Alabama’s prehospital providers and the critical impact they make on the lives of children throughout the state.

To raise awareness of the important functions emergency medical services (EMS) personnel perform, Katherine Hert, Alabama EMSC director, partnered with the Alabama Association of School Nurses to request that school children hand write thank you notes and color pictures to give to EMS personnel. Thanks to this campaign recommended by the federal program, more than 4,000 cards and pictures will be delivered to Alabama EMS personnel in each of the 314 licensed services in Alabama.

“We appreciate the dedication and skills of EMS personnel who provide the highest quality of emergency care to help children each day,” Mrs. Hert said. “Their efforts help ensure optimal care of children in the prehospital and emergency care settings.”

Each year during EMS Week, the federal EMSC program partners with the American College of Emergency Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Emergency Nurses Association to celebrate EMSC Day. The purpose of the annual celebration is to increase awareness about the need to improve and expand specialized care for children in the prehospital and acute care settings.
