The Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) was notified and has investigated a recent complaint about Turner’s ABC Learning Center Site 2, 202 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., in Union Springs.
On June 20, a public health environmentalist found bats to be inhabiting some parts of the Turner's Learning ABC Center building, with at least two dead bats seen in the living space. Only a small percentage of all bats carry and transmit rabies.
At the request of ADPH and the Department of Human Resources, the center was closed voluntarily on Thursday afternoon, June 20, to prevent any possible exposures. Parents of the attendees are being contacted.
A professional wildlife specialist has begun work and will identify and correct any issues at the daycare to protect the health of children, staff, and visitors.
After this work is completed, ADPH will provide a courtesy inspection to look for any additional bats or environmental contamination from the bats that would pose a risk to the building occupants. The public is advised to avoid contact with bats, live or dead, to prevent possible rabies exposure. If exposure to people or pets is suspected, dead, sick, or easily captured bats should be tested.
ADPH is recommending that all children at this daycare receive preventive treatment for rabies. Multiple attempts have been made to contact all parents and caregivers of enrolled children.
