The Alabama Department of Public Health's Home Health and Community Services program is seeking to fill multiple positions statewide for nurses to provide home care services. Supervisory, managerial, and administrative positions are also currently available.
About the Job
Cynthia Parsons, BSN, RN WCC, is the Home Care Director/Administrator of the Southwestern District. She explained that nurses working in the Home Care program are required to perform home visits of no less than 30 minutes each for 5-7 patients daily.
"This includes a head-to-toe assessment with each visit, and could include any of the following: medication management, disease education, wound care, and IV therapy," Parsons said.
Jacqueline Kliner, MSN, RN CWCN, Home Care Nurse Administrator for the West Central District, mentioned additional services that may be required, including documentation of all home visits, coordination of services with other agencies, and, for some positions, in-home supervision of LPN nurses and home health aides.
When asked what personal traits are helpful for nurses working in home care, Kliner said, "The successful home care nurse is one who functions with autonomy at the bedside and excellent critical thinking, communication, and time management skills."
Parsons added that "humility, compassion, dedication, and a sense of humor" are also important qualities for successful home health nurses.
Varying amounts of travel are required for home health nurses, ranging from daily travel for those who are conducting home health visits, to "as needed" travel for supervisory and management staff.
