Project Description
Southern Prevention Associates, located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, provides abstinence education in Greene, Jefferson, Sumter, and Walker Counties. The program is delivered in eighth grade classes at 13 middle and junior high schools. The evidence-based curriculum, Making a Difference, provides students with the knowledge and skills to reduce their risk for sexually transmitted diseases, HIV, and pregnancy by abstaining from sexual activity. The curriculum, which includes videos, role-playing, skill-building activities and group discussion, is taught by trained facilitators in 13 sessions. Parents are provided a monthly newsletter with information on the prevention of all adolescent risky behaviors. In addition, Southern Prevention also specializes in substance abuse prevention services, developing community coalitions, sponsoring Peer Leader Programs at the high school level, and promoting risky behavior education and awareness.
