The week of April 4-10 is National Public Health Week, and April 7 is World Health Day, two observances established to recognize contributions made by public health and to highlight important issues. The critical need for public health has been magnified by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In concert with the National Public Health Week 2022 theme, “Public Health is Where You Are,” the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) encourages the public to take action in their communities to lead healthier and happier lives.

Some activities to promote health cost little or no money. One important way to improve health is to eat healthier food. In addition to healthier eating, being physically active can reduce the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and several cancers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention promotes regular physical activity and recommends that adults get a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity each week, yet only 68 percent of adults participate in any leisure-time physical activity or exercises on a monthly basis.

The ADPH Nutrition and Physical Activity Division has listed the following reasons everyone should engage in physical activity:

  • Improved immune system function
  • Improved psychological functioning
  • Improved self-image
  • Helps you stay at or get to a healthy weight
  • Improved circulation
  • Helps manage stress
  • Increased energy levels
  • Decreased chance of depression
  • Helps you fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly
  • Increased chance of living longer
  • Increased mobility
  • Stronger muscles and bones
  • Helps you meet new people
National Public Health Week is a great time to consider becoming more physically active. Most healthy people can begin a moderate intensity activity routine if they have medical clearance before getting started. This will help make sure any planned activities are appropriate for their health status. Physical activity can be safe for almost everyone, and the health benefits of physical activity are worth it.
