Healthy Start

Welcome to the Building a Healthy Start: Professional Development for Caregivers of Infants and Toddlers Project. Our purpose is to improve the quality of infant and toddler child care in Alabama by integrating nationally recognized health and safety standards into six best practice training modules for caregivers of infants and toddlers.

Topical areas addressed by the modules are:

  • nutrition
  • physical activity
  • disaster preparedness
  • environmental health
  • social emotional development
  • child abuse and neglect prevention

Each Building a Healthy Start module provides information specific to the care of infants and toddlers, and presents a developmental approach to promote optimal health outcomes during the first three years of life. Twenty-eight standards from Caring for Our Children: National Health and Safety Performance Standards; Guidelines for Early Care and Education Programs, Third Edition (CFOC3) form the foundation for the module content.

These modules are under development and will be released as completed during the three-year project period. This project is administered by the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) and funded by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, Health Resources and Services Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
