The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity, recognizes individuals and organizations for their outstanding efforts to ensure the United States is comprised of healthy environments (i.e., communities, early care and education, hospitals, schools, and workplaces) which provide access to and reinforce healthful eating and active living. The Weight of the Nation 2012 awards showcases innovative practice that achieves maximum reach, impact and improvements in health outcomes through environmental, economic, social, or cultural shifts which establish healthy eating and active living as social norms.
The five award categories and their respective winners are presented below. A short video of each award winner and links to their respective programs are also included.
Community Mobilization Award |

The Community Mobilization Award recognizes Dr. Antronette Yancey in her efforts to engage all sectors of the population in a community-wide effort to eliminate poor diet, physical inactivity, and obesity. Dr. Yancey’s innovative “Instant Recess” concept demonstrates her commitment to addressing social determinants of health at the community level. |

Systems Change Award |
|
|
The Systems Change Award recognizes the University of Texas School of Public Health’s CATCH program as an organization implementing an organized, structured set of obesity prevention methods likely to result in population-level changes. CATCH demonstrates how collaboration across settings, sectors, and jurisdictions can lead to decreased population-level obesity. |

Game Changer Award |
|
|
The Game Changer Award recognizes Deb Hubsmith in her efforts to lead the development and implementation of obesity methodologies resulting in successful obesity prevention strategies. Hubsmith’s dedication to the Safe Routes to School National Partnership highlights her determination to advance obesity prevention though activities that have had a significant impact on various populations. |

Applied Obesity Research Award |
|
|
The Applied Obesity Research Award is recognizing three organizations: Active Living Research, Healthy Eating Research, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, who are working to solve the obesity problem, not just document its existence. Research from these award winners shows how collaborations identify enhancements to improve health outcomes. |

The Applied Technology Award is recognizing The Center for Applied Research and Environmental Systems (CARES) for their use of graphic, audio, web-based, and mobile technologies to increase awareness on the importance of healthy lifestyles. CARES' innovative use of social media is increasing public awareness and knowledge of healthy living. |
