Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Education

ADPH works to promote healthy adolescent choices by:

  • Providing resources and presentations to parents, community groups and educators to promote positive youth development (the basic things that adolescents need to make positive health decisions).
  • Collaborating with community action groups to analyze data trends regarding adolescent risk behaviors.
  • Providing resources through grants to reduce the adolescent pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease rates.
  • Providing information about successful adolescent health initiatives.
  • Reaching youth, parents, and community leaders through outreach events to provide information on parent-child communication, risk behaviors, and community resources.
  • Administering the Title V Sexual Risk Avoidance Education Grant in Alabama.
  • Administering the State Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP) in Alabama.

Alabama Sexual Risk Avoidance Education Program (ASRAE)

  • Title V Sexual Risk Avoidance Education Grant Program.
  • Effective, evidence-based, and evidence-informed education programs to at-risk youth aged 10-19 to promote abstinence from non-marital sexual activity.
  • The selected materials will help youth explore the changes that occur during adolescence; promote resistance to all youth risk behaviors, including sexual risk taking; develop interpersonal relationship skills that also encourage family resilience and parent-child communication; understand the foundational components of healthy relationships; and promote the development of protective factors by empowering adolescents to respond to developmental challenges in practical and effective ways.
  • The focal group is youth aged 12-19 in under-resourced regions, areas with a high rate of teen births and sexually transmitted infections, youth aging out of foster care or adjudication systems, and other vulnerable youth populations.
  • Programming will be provided as requested in community-based settings to include health departments, faith-based organizations, and state agencies.
  • Parental notification of programming to be implemented and parental permission as required.
  • Program materials are compliant with federal, state, and grant requirements.
  • Programming is currently provided through a combination of trained Public Health Educators and Public Health Social Workers based in the Central Office and in two or more public health districts.
