Program Overview

First Aid is the care given to a casualty before a medical professional arrives. It can come from a home care worker, a member of the family, a friend, or a stranger who happens to be on the spot, but the help they give can literally mean the difference between life and death. As most people know, most accidents happen in the home. It takes only three to four minutes for a blocked airway to take someone's life, but it can take more than eight minutes for an ambulance to arrive on the scene.

Properly applied first aid can obviously save lives, reduce recovery time and quite possibly mean the difference between temporary disability or lifelong disability for the victim.

The purpose of this program is to teach the Home Health Aides and Home Attendants how to recognize, evaluate and treat victims of accidents and sudden illnesses. Topics covered include: airway and breathing difficulty; seizures; environmental concerns; falls; types and treatment of burns; injured extremities; bleeding and accident prevention.
