Million Hearts

Million Hearts® is a national initiative to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes by 2027. It focuses on implementing a small set of evidence-based priorities and targets to improve cardiovascular health.

Overview

Heart disease and stroke are the first and fourth leading causes of death in the United States. Heart disease is responsible for one of every three deaths in the country. Every 34 seconds in the United States, an adult dies from cardiovascular disease, a disease that is largely preventable. Million Hearts® goal is to save more of the lives taken and protect more of the lives impacted by heart disease and stroke in the United States.

Million Hearts® exists to:

  • Convene health care and public health champions
  • Facilitate impactful collaboration and resource-sharing
  • Promote implementation of evidence-based strategies to prevent cardiovascular disease
  • Address health inequity through specific policies, processes, and practices

Million Hearts® national initiative is co-led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
