Strategic National Stockpile

The Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR) maintains the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS). The SNS is made up of supplies, medicines, and devices that can be utilized when the immediate supply of these materials may not be available in the wake of a public health emergency such as a terrorist attack, flu outbreak, earthquake, etc.

Once federal and local authorities agree that the SNS is needed, supplies will be delivered to any state in the United States within 12 hours. Each state has plans to receive and distribute SNS supplies to local communities as quickly as possible through Open Point of Dispensing (POD) sites.

Alabama’s SNS plans also include delivering medications through Closed POD sites located through the state. Closed PODs are used primarily to respond to specific groups or organizations, which allows for rapid dispensing within these organization and helps to ensure the continuity of organizational operations. This will also aid in redirecting some of the population away from Open POD sites, reducing congestion at those sites.
