EPA Testing Recommendations for Alabama

In some types of terrain, radon testing can require special consideration. One such case is in areas of karst geology. Karst is a broad term used by geologists for features where portions of rock have been dissolved away by water. Although karst is found in many areas of the United States, Alabama, particularly north Alabama, has many of these geologic formations. Radon levels can be extremely variable in these areas. Therefore, in order to provide the correct testing guidance, one must determine whether they live in an area affected by this geologic condition.

Library Access

The Alabama State Radon Program has partnered with local libraries to provide free EcoSense continuous radon monitors to their patrons. The monitor displays an initial reading within 10 minutes and delivers a reliable result within 10 hours. Because radon levels fluctuate naturally, you can track your data using rolling averages across hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, and long-term views. Contrast this to passive radon tests, which can take longer to get a result. Currently, 64 libraries across the state participate in the program. Additional libraries will be added as the program continues. Check the list below for libraries currently participating. If your local library is not listed, consider reaching out to encourage them to join this program.

If your result is at the EPA recommended action level of 4 pCi/L or above, we recommend you follow up with an approved radon testing device or certified measurement professional for verification before making mitigation decisions. The current ANSI/AARST standards recommend mitigation decisions be based upon the average of two short-term radon tests, a long-term radon test, continuous radon monitor reading, or utilizing a certified radon measurement professional.
