Guide to Services

Regular medical care can prevent many health problems and save unnecessary loss of lives, productivity, and money. The following services are provided at the Monroe County Health Department:

Cancer Detection

  • Breast examinations and self-examination instructions. If you are age 50 or older, you may also qualify for a free mammogram.
  • Pap Smears
  • Help in finding treatment

Family Planning

  • Birth control information, medical exams, and supplies
  • Family planning methods, counseling, and education

HIV/AIDS

Confidential information, testing, counseling, social work services, home care, and referrals to other support services in the community. For more information about services, call the Alabama AIDS Hotline at (800) 228-0469. Visit the HIV/AIDS Program.

Immunizations

  • Immunizations are provided free of charge to help prevent childhood diseases.
  • Immunizations are provided to adults for measles, tetanus, flu and other diseases.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD)

Confidential testing, treatment, and counseling for most sexually transmitted diseases. For more information, visit the Sexually Transmitted Diseases Program.

Tuberculosis

Tuberculin skin tests, sputum tests, and X-rays (if indicated) are available to anyone for diagnosis & treatment of tuberculosis. Medications are provided if indicated. We test high risk individuals, contacts to TB, and suspects for active TB disease. We do not perform tests for TB on persons for their job or school. Nutrition Services (Women Infant and Children)

Nutritious foods and nutrition education services are available free to limited-income, pregnant, breast feeding, and postpartum women. Is also available to infants and children up to age 5 who qualify for WIC. (Example: a family of four can earn up to $33,485 annually and qualify for WIC services). Birth and Death Certificates

Certified copies of birth, death, marriage, and divorce certificates for the State of Alabama can be obtained from your local county Health Department for a fee of $15.00 for the first copy and $6.00 for each additional copy purchased at the same time. These certificates can usually be issued within an hour.

Health Standard Protection

The Alabama Department of Public Health ensures standards in several environmental and health-related service areas to protect the public from injury and the spread of disease. These health-protection activities, such as permitting, licensing, inspections, complaint investigations, and health regulations enforcement, include the following:

  • Food and lodging protection
  • Insect and animal nuisances than can transmit disease to humans
  • Onsite sewage disposal systems
  • Solid waste
  • Water supply in individual residential wells

Home Health Services

  • Skilled nursing, home health aide, social worker and therapy services are available through your local county Health Department. Medicare, Medicaid and other insurance are accepted for these home care services.
  • Other services available through your local county Health Department include personal care aide, skilled and unskilled respite and homemaker services. Medicaid-Waiver benefits and all third-party payors (except Medicare) are accepted for these services. Call (251) 575-2980 or (800) 239-2980 for more information.

Alabama Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program

Breast and cervical cancer screening is provided to women primarily over the age of 40 who are uninsured or underinsured and meet income guidelines. Visit the Alabama Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program.

Health Insurance

Free or low-cost health care coverage is available to all eligible children under 19 years. This health care coverage is provided by ALL Kids or Medicaid. For more information or to apply online, visit ALL Kids.
