Southeast Regional Pilot Acute Stroke System (SRPASS)

Stroke is the leading cause of serious long-term disability in the United States and is the fourth leading cause of death. Of 795,000 strokes that are suffered each year, 600,000 are first attacks, and 143,579 stroke victims die. Of the total percentage of strokes each year, 87% of are ischemic, 10% are intracerebral hemorrhage, and 3% are subarachnoid hemorrhage. Ischemic strokes can be treated and sometimes completely reversed by use of the thrombolytic agent tissue plasminogen activator (tPA, activase/alteplase). Our goal is to develop a stroke emergency care system that, when fully implemented, will result in 100 percent tPA administration to all eligible patients and a minimum of ten percent administration to all ischemic stroke patients, as well as decreased stroke mortality and disability in Alabama.
