CDC Recommends Updated COVID-19 Vaccine for Fall/Winter Virus Season

The updated 2023-2024 COVID-19 vaccine is now available at Alabama county health departments, select retail pharmacy locations, and other providers throughout the state. Due to limited supplies, individuals with insurance that includes vaccine coverage are encouraged to visit vaccines.gov or text your zip code to 438829 to find a COVID-19 vaccine clinic near you. The county health departments are unable to bill any insurance plans for the vaccine except for most Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama plans and Medicare Part B.

The county health departments will provide the vaccines without cost to individuals who qualify for the Vaccines for Children program (VFC) or the Bridge Access Program. The Alabama COVID-19 Bridge Access Program will provide COVID-19 vaccines to adults who are uninsured, underinsured or are of American Indian, Native Alaskan, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander race. Underinsured is defined as individuals who have insurance that does not cover vaccines but does not include those whose coverage only provides vaccines through network providers.

What's New?

To help ensure that millions of uninsured and underinsured American adults continue to have access to no-cost COVID-19 vaccinations, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is launching the Bridge Access Program for COVID-19 vaccines this fall. The Alabama COVID-19 Bridge Access Program will provide COVID-19 vaccines to adults who are uninsured and underinsured. These vaccines will be provided at the following locations: County Health Departments, Federally Qualified Health Centers, Rural Health Centers, Indian Health Services, and some independent pharmacies that are located in medically underserved communities.

You must be enrolled in this program to receive and provide COVID-19 Bridge Access Program vaccines.
