School Policies

Electronic cigarettes have many names --- e-cigs, vapes, and ENDS; however, none of these products should be used by children and all are very addictive. The Alabama Youth Tobacco Prevention and Control Program works with select Alabama schools to provide tobacco prevention education. Students are surveyed before and after attending a tobacco prevention class. Below is a snapshot of results from high school students completing the post-education survey.

The model tobacco-free school campus policy effectively prevents and reduces youth tobacco use among their students. The Public Health Law Center is a comprehensive source of school tobacco policy.

Alabama Public School System Tobacco Policies

The State of Alabama, State Board of Education revised the Administrative Code on Public School Governance that "effective with the 1995-1996 school year and thereafter, local boards of education must adopt a uniform policy prohibiting the use to tobacco products on school property and prescribing specific penalties for violation this policy."

In 2011, 132 Alabama Public School systems were evaluated to identify schools without a tobacco dress code policy. A school dress code includes a tobacco dress code prohibits students from wearing clothing with pictures, writing, and/or symbols promoting the use of tobacco. The 2011 evaluation found that 73% of surveyed schools do not allow tobacco related clothing articles having either have a tobacco dress code or uniform policy.
