What is Public Health Nursing?
Public health nursing is a community-based nursing profession. Highly-skilled professionals provide disease prevention education and acute care to the citizens of Alabama utilizing community/population health knowledge.
What Do Public Health Nurses Do?
Public health nurses provide care and education in a variety of fields including, but not limited to:
- Family Planning
- Women, Infants, and Children Nutrition
- Tuberculosis Management and Treatment
- Child Health
- Sexually Transmitted Disease Education and Treatment
- Emergency Preparedness
- Child and Adult Immunization
- Infection Prevention and Control
- Infectious Disease and Outbreaks

What Nursing Career Positions Are Available?

Licensed Practical Nurse
- Graduation from an approved school or practical nurse education
- Possession of a license as a practical nurse as issued by the Alabama Board of Nursing
Registered Nurse
- Associate's degree or higher from an accredited college or university in Nursing or diploma in Nursing
- Possession of a license as a registered nurse as issued by the Alabama Board of Nursing
Staff Nurse
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Nursing
or - Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in Nursing or diploma in Nursing and two years of professional nursing experience
Nurse Coordinator
- Master's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Nursing, Public Health, or a closely related field; Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Nursing; and one year of professional nursing experience
or - Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Nursing and two years of professional nursing experience
or - Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in Nursing or diploma in Nursing and four years of professional nursing experience
Nurse Supervisor
- Master's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Nursing, Public Health, or a closely related field; Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Nursing; and two years of professional nursing experience, including one year of supervisory experience, preferably in community health nursing
or - Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Nursing and three years of professional nursing experience, including two years of supervisory experience, preferably in community health nursing
or - Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in Nursing diploma in Nursing and five years of professional nursing experience, including three years of supervisory experience, preferably in community health nursing
Nurse Practitioner
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Nursing and successful completion of a nurse practitioner course from an approved school of nursing or medicine
or - Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in Nursing or diploma in Nursing; successful completion of a nurse practitioner course from an approved school of nursing or medicine; and two years of professional nursing experience
Nurse Manager
- Master's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Nursing, Public Health, Public Administration or Business Administration; Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Nursing; and four years of professional nursing experience, including two years of supervisory or administrative experience
or - Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Nursing and five years of professional nursing experience, including three years of supervisory or administrative experience
or - Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in Nursing diploma in Nursing and seven years of professional nursing experience, including four years of supervisory or administrative experience
Nurse Administrator
- Master's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Nursing, Public Health, Public Administration or Business Administration; Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Nursing; and eight years of professional nursing experience, including three years of administrative supervisory experience
or - Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Nursing and ten years of professional nursing experience, including five years of administrative supervisory experience
