Alabama Rural Medical Service Award (ARMSA)
ARMSA gives service-payback loans to primary care physicians (PCPs), Obstetricians (OBs) and family medicine nurse practitioners (NPs) in return for their practicing in Alabama rural communities that have a shortage of PCPs. The Program is sponsored by the Alabama Department of Public Health's (ADPH) Office of Primary Care and Rural Health. It was developed by Governor Kay Ivey's policy office and funded by a legislative act. The award is $50,000 per year for a maximum of 3 years for PCPs and OBs and $30,000 per year for a maximum of 3 years for NPs.
For more information, please visit the Alabama Rural Medical Service Award page.
Board of Medical Scholarships Award (BMSA)
The Board of Medical Scholarship Award (BMSA) was created as an incentive to increase the supply of primary care physicians (family practice, internal medicine, and pediatrics) and encourage their practice in the state's rural medically underserved communities. Educational loans are awarded for students enrolled in medical schools in the State of Alabama. In exchange for repaying the loan, scholarship recipients' agree to return to a pre-approved medically, underserved community to practice primary care medicine. Any Alabama resident enrolled in any of the state's medical schools are eligible with preference given to those demonstrating economic need.

Board of Dental Scholarships Award (BDSA)
The Board of Dental Scholarships Award (BDSA) considers candidates for an upfront award of $180k in return for at least four years of service in an Alabama small town/rural community in need of a dental professional (31 qualifying counties below). In addition to the monetary award, BDSA personnel will help awardees locate a practice home, if desired, and arrange for a practice mentor for support. The award money is in addition to any regular earnings -- it does not replace or constitute an awardee's practice income. D1-D4 dental students are eligible to apply.
A call for applications is advertised twice a year, with applications due typically in both July and January. Selected candidates will interview with the Board of Dental Scholarships (BDS) -- the BDS typically conducts interviews twice a year (February and August).
