Insights on Prescribing and Dispensing Controlled Substances Mini Conferences
Free 3 Hour Live Continuing Education Opportunity
The Pharmacy Division, in coordination with Auburn University's Harrison College of Pharmacy, Center for Opioid Research, Education and Outreach (COACH), sponsored three (3) free 3-hour live continuing education mini-conferences in June, July, and August 2025, in Mobile, Auburn, and Huntsville. These conferences covered numerous state and federal laws/regulations related to controlled substances, which can be confusing to prescribers and dispensers. This program aimed to clarify those rules and regulations, as well as best practices.
Target Audience:
This knowledge-based course is intended for Pharmacists (ACPE), Pharmacy Technicians (ACPE), Physicians (ACCME), Physician Assistants (ACCME), Nurse Practitioners (ACCME), and Dentists (AL board approval).
Learning Objectives:
- Review rules and regulations related to controlled substances.
- Discuss differences in state and federal rules and regulations related to controlled substances.
- Examine best practices for prescribing and dispensing controlled substances.
We will post the recording of this mini-conference as soon as it becomes available.

The 2025 Substance Misuse Summit featured an incredible slate of speakers, headlined by keynote speaker Dr. Ben Carson, who served as the 17th United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development from 2017 to 2021. Joining Dr. Carson were State Health Officer Dr. Scott Harris, Alabama Department of Mental Health Commissioner Kim Boswell, and many other notable speakers. The Alabama Department of Public Health joined the Auburn University Harrison College of Pharmacy's Center for Opioid Research, Education, and Outreach, and the University of South Alabama Office of CME to host the event.
