December 2016 Meeting Presentations
Donna Shanklin is a Regional Extension Agent in Cullman County working on the AL ProHealth Project. The project is creating opportunities in Cullman to promote policy, system, and environmental changes that support efforts to increase physical activity and healthy food access throughout the community.
Will Wright is the CEO of Pack Health and gave a presentation to members about the program. Pack Health is a new partner in reducing and preventing obesity. They are providing individuals with online tools and a health coach to better manage their health and improve their quality of life.
Donna Dunaway presented information about the Alabama Champions for Healthy Active Schools Initiative, which encourages a comprehensive physical activity program to address school health. The program consists of multiple components that promote a healthy school environment with the school wellness policy as the foundation.
Patricia Maiden-Lewis is a high school teacher at Robert C. Hatch High School who is the lead for the Champions Initiative in Perry County. Her presentation described how an academic teacher became passionate about school health and was able to create a healthier environment for the students and faculty. She ended her presentation by involving the audience in a physical activity brain booster that's being used in her school.
August 2016 Meeting Presentation
The Montgomery Area Food Bank is fighting hunger and food insecurity by distributing grocery products to those in need across 35 counties in Alabama. Anastasia Papastefan, Nutrition Assistant for the Montgomery Area Food Bank, reviewed the various feeding programs offered through the Food Bank and discussed opportunities for partnership with the Obesity Task Force.
May 2016 Meeting Presentations
Health starts where you live, learn, work and play. Dan Popovic, founder of cMEcompete, is a former endurance athlete, the founder and race director of Atlanta BeltLine Running Series, and has over 18 years of experience in product innovation. He talked to the Task Force about strategies to engage a healthy community through gamification.
Julie Odom, special projects coordinator with the Alabama Partnership for Children, gave a presentation on the National Early Care and Education Learning Collaboratives Project in Alabama. The goal of the project is to strengthen state partnerships to improve the quality of obesity prevention practices in ECE programs.
